American Airlines Nears Widebody Aircraft Decision
American Airlines is nearing a decision on its next widebody aircraft order, which could potentially involve up to 65 jets. According to Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper, the airline has reached an advanced stage in the selection process, with both Airbus and Boeing remaining in contention.
The requirement for new widebodies stems from American's plans to eventually retire its aging Boeing 777-200ERs, which are set to exit service over the next decade. The airline currently operates 47 of these aircraft, as well as 20 777-300ERs that will be refurbished and kept in service until at least the late 2030s.
Pieper likened the selection process to a baseball game, saying American is now in the 'seventh or eighth inning.' He also noted that the outcome could go either way, with no clear favorite among the competing aircraft. Deliveries for the new widebodies are expected to begin in the early 2030s.
