American Airlines Reboots Seatback Screen Program with High-Tech Upgrades
American Airlines has announced that it will introduce state-of-the-art seatback screens on every seat of its narrowbody fleet, including Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 aircraft. The new screens will be delivered starting in 2028 and will also be installed on retrofitted planes. This move is a significant shift from the airline's previous policy of removing seatback screens, which was implemented due to cost reductions, passenger preference for personal devices, and aircraft performance issues.
The new screens will feature improved picture quality, faster connectivity, and personalized content. American Airlines has emphasized that the screens will be among the largest in the industry, with 4K quality and USB-C ports for convenient fast charging. The airline is also introducing more premium seats, increasing from 25% to 40% on its narrowbody jets.
Heather Garboden, American's Chief Customer Officer, noted that the move represents one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in the airline's history. She stated, 'From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey.'
