American Airlines' Widebody Decision Hangs in Balance Between Boeing and Airbus

American Airlines is on the verge of making a major decision about its widebody aircraft fleet. The airline has issued a request for proposals to both Boeing and Airbus, and while Boeing has structural advantages, the outcome could go either way, according to American's Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper.

The airline currently operates one of the largest widebody fleets among U.S. carriers, entirely built on Boeing aircraft. It needs to replace its aging 777-200ERs and plan for future international growth. The realistic contest centers on Boeing's 787-9 or 787-10 against Airbus's A330neo.

Boeing gets points for fleet commonality, as American already flies the 787-8 and 787-9. However, the airline has a preference for moderate-capacity long-haul aircraft, which may not fit with Boeing's larger 787-10 variant. Pilot training is another key factor, as introducing a new type from Airbus would require separate training pipelines and management.

Airbus, however, can offset Boeing's commonality advantage on price. Pieper argues that the company can provide the best airplane suited to American's missions. The A330neo is seen as Airbus's strongest card, offering earlier delivery slots than aircraft facing longer production backlogs.
