American Airlines' Widebody Order: Boeing vs Airbus in High-Stakes Competition
American Airlines is currently in talks to replace its aging widebody fleet with up to 65 new aircraft, with both Boeing and Airbus vying for the contract.
The airline's Chief Commercial Officer, Nat Pieper, said that the competition 'could go either way', citing Boeing's structural advantages but also acknowledging Airbus's strong bid.
American already operates a fleet of Boeing 787s, which gives the company established training programs and spare parts inventories, but this may not be enough to secure the order, given Airbus's competitive pricing and the potential for earlier delivery slots.
The A330neo is seen as Airbus's strongest contender, being smaller and less expensive than other widebody options, while the larger and pricier A350 and 777X are considered long shots due to their size and cost.
