Amex Introduces Blockchain-Based Passport Stamps for Cardholders
American Express has introduced blockchain-based passport stamps that allow cardholders to commemorate their travels digitally. The NFT stamps are stored as ERC-721 tokens on the Ethereum layer-2 Base network, allowing customers to preserve memories of their trips. Each stamp can be customized with specific trip experiences, including landmark visits, memorable meals, hotel stays, or favorite activities.
The digital passport program is available only to U.S. Amex consumer cardholders with linked online accounts. According to American Express survey data, 73% of respondents wanted more digital ways to commemorate past trips, and 56% expressed missing traditional passport stamps when arriving in new countries. The program retroactively generates stamps for trips booked through Amex within the past two years.
The NFTs cannot be transferred between users and display limited information, including country, description, and earn date, without revealing personal travel details. Customers can share their digital collections on social media platforms or save images to personal devices for future reference. Blockchain technology enables secure data storage without centralized servers.
