Amgen and AstraZeneca's Lung Cancer Treatment Yields Positive Trial Results
Pharmaceutical giants Amgen Inc. and AstraZeneca PLC announced positive results from their combined lung cancer treatment trial, showing improved survival rates for patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer.
The late-stage clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of Amgen's Imdelltra in combination with AstraZeneca's Imfinzi as a maintenance treatment compared to using Imfinzi alone. Patients who had not experienced disease progression after initial therapy received the combined treatment, demonstrating improvements across multiple measures: overall survival, progression-free survival, and response rate.
The companies reported no new safety concerns arose during the trial. Imdelltra was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2024 for extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer, followed by traditional approval in 2025. Last year, Imdelltra generated $513 million in sales for Amgen, representing approximately 23% of its total revenue.
Imdelltra is a bispecific antibody that connects cancer cells with immune cells to enable the body's immune system to destroy cancer. This innovative approach contributes to Amgen's portfolio of such treatments.
