Pharmaceutical giant Amgen has disclosed a data breach involving patient health information after hackers targeted its cloud storage systems run by third-party providers. The incident occurred on July 29, and Amgen determined it was material based on its evaluation of the affected files' sensitivity.
The company has activated its cybersecurity response plan and brought in independent forensic experts to investigate. It is still assessing whether patient information, confidential business data, intellectual property, or research and development information may have been accessed or stolen.
Amgen stressed that it takes patient privacy and data security seriously and will notify affected parties, including patients, based on its findings. The breach comes as the company faces scrutiny over its rare-disease drug Tavneos after a key study backing the treatment was retracted by a major medical journal.
