Amgen Faces Animal Rights Protests Over Partnership with Breeding Company
Animal rights activists have been protesting Amgen's relationship with Marshall BioResources (MBR), a global supplier of animals for laboratory research. On August 3, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) organized a protest outside Amgen's campus in Thousand Oaks, California, where about 20 participants gathered to chant slogans and display signs that read 'Save the Dogs'.
Pete Reimann, a protester with the True Cost Project, poured fake blood on the ground during the demonstration. He stated that MBR has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture multiple times for violations of the Animal Welfare Act since 2007.
Amgen's Thousand Oaks research facility used 23 dogs in research in 2025, according to a USDA inspection report. DxE claims that Amgen can end its relationship with MBR due to its financial resources and influence.
MBR responded by stating that it follows all regulations and laws, and has not been found guilty of animal abuse allegations despite facing them. The company also emphasized its voluntary accreditation through AAALAC International, an independent nonprofit organization promoting high standards in animal research.
