Amgen Hit by Cloud Security Breach, Patient Data Stolen
Biopharma giant Amgen has confirmed that it suffered a significant cloud security breach in July, resulting in the theft of sensitive patient health information and proprietary company data. The California-based drugmaker identified unauthorized activity within cloud storage systems hosted by external service providers on July 10, triggering its cybersecurity response plan.
Despite containment measures being activated promptly, hackers were able to exfiltrate data before those efforts took effect. Amgen formally classified the incident as a material cybersecurity event on July 29 and disclosed it to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on July 31.
The company stated that it has not identified any impact on its products, manufacturing operations, financial reporting, or delivery of medicines to patients. However, the breach is under investigation, and Amgen plans to notify affected patients once the full scope of compromised records is assessed.
