Amgen Valuation Suggests Limited Upside Despite New High

Amgen has reached a new high of $441.56, just shy of its 52-week peak of $447.03. The biotech company's stock has surged by 55.4% over the past year, but its valuation tells a more nuanced story.

The company's fundamentals are strong, with revenue growth from $25.98 billion in 2021 to an estimated $36.75 billion in 2025, representing a 41.4% increase over four fiscal years. EBITDA has also climbed in lockstep, while free cash flow remains robust at around $8.6 billion annually over five years.

However, the market has already priced in much of this good news, with Amgen trading at 27.4x trailing P/E and 16.0x EV/EBITDA, making it a pricey large-cap biotech. The forward P/E is slightly more reasonable at 19.1x, but only if earnings growth materializes as expected.

The company's heavily leveraged balance sheet, with a debt-to-equity ratio of 490.3%, also warrants attention. Amgen took on significant debt acquiring Horizon Therapeutics and now faces regulatory challenges to its Enbrel patent acquisition.
