Amgen's Patient Data Exposed in Latest Healthcare Sector Cyberattack
Amgen has disclosed a data breach in which hackers stole company data and patient health information from cloud storage systems run by third-party providers. The incident comes as the healthcare sector grapples with a surge in cyberattacks, with several major companies recently affected.
According to Amgen's regulatory filing, on July 29, the company determined that the incident was material based on its evaluation of how many files appeared to be affected and the possibility that the information in those files could be sensitive. To date, Amgen has not found any impact on its products, manufacturing operations, financial reporting systems, or its ability to meet patient needs.
Amgen has activated its cybersecurity response plan, put containment measures in place, and brought in independent forensic experts to investigate the incident. The company is still evaluating what regulatory and legal notifications are required and will notify affected parties, including patients, based on its findings.
