Android Auto Gets Long-Awaited Real-Time Vehicle Data Feature

Google has finally updated Google Maps on Android Auto to include a persistent speedometer that displays drivers' current speed and posted speed limits, even when not actively navigating. This feature was previously only available on mobile devices and Waze.

For years, Android Auto users have been frustrated by the lack of real-time vehicle data display during normal driving without navigation. The update decouples telemetry data from route guidance, allowing drivers to access essential information without needing an active navigation route.

The feature includes a live speedometer and upcoming traffic cues persistently active on screen, providing situational awareness during unguided driving. This update arrives alongside the clarification that recent issues with disappearing speedometer icons were due to software glitches, not intentional deprecation or regional rollbacks.

Google is rolling out this feature globally via server-side updates along with the latest Android Auto build releases. Drivers may need to wait a few weeks for the functionality to activate automatically as the gradual deployment expands.
