Android Auto Works Offline: Here's How to Get Started
Android Auto is a lifesaver for many drivers who rely on it to navigate through unfamiliar territories, listen to podcasts, and get work done while on the go. But what happens when you're in an area with limited or no cell service? Does Android Auto become useless?
Not necessarily.
The platform can still be used without mobile data, and users don't need to access its secret menu to do so. This is based on personal experience from the author, who has encountered areas with extremely limited cell service while driving. Despite this, they were still able to use Android Auto for maps and podcasts.
To make the most of offline capabilities, Google Maps can be used to download routes and areas in advance. To do this, open the app on your phone while connected to the internet, tap your profile icon, select Offline maps from the menu, choose Select your own map, and then download the desired area.
For an entirely offline experience with a focus on privacy, apps like Organic Maps can be used for turn-by-turn directions on Android Auto. It also offers features for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. For music and podcasts, users can rely on apps that offer free downloads or local playback of owned content.
