Android Enables Seamless Password Transfer Between Managers

Google has enabled a password transfer feature in Android that allows users to move their passwords and passkeys directly from one password manager to another without having to download them as an unencrypted text file. This feature was previously not available for passkeys, which are sign-in credentials stored within the manager, making it necessary to recreate each one when switching managers.

The transfer process is initiated within the new password manager app, where users select the option to import or copy from another provider. Android then detects the existing password managers on the device and displays a list of available options for transfer. Users can review and authorize what data will be transferred before the process begins.

Currently, four password managers support this feature: Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. More partners are expected to follow suit, although no specific dates or names were provided by Google.
