Android Enables Seamless Password Transfer Between Password Managers
Google has released an update for its Android operating system that enables seamless password and passkey transfer between various password managers. The new feature, which went live on September 10th, 2026, allows users to easily switch between Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, and other supported apps without the need for manual exports or CSV files.
The process involves a three-step flow: opening the destination password manager, selecting the import option, and authenticating with a fingerprint, face, or PIN. Android acts as an intermediary, scanning the phone for other password managers and facilitating the transfer in seconds. This new feature is built on top of the FIDO Alliance's Credential Exchange Format, which was approved as a proposed standard on August 14th, 2025.
The move aims to simplify password management and provide users with more flexibility when switching between apps. This development comes after Apple implemented a similar feature in iOS 26 back in September 2025, with the support of companies like 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane who helped write the standard.
