Android Phones Quietly Switch to SMS When Using Google Messages

If you're an Android user relying on Google Messages for texting, there's a chance your phone might silently switch to using SMS instead of RCS (Rich Communication Services) without warning. This can happen when your phone's connection to Google's servers is disrupted or due to outdated cache and app data.

To determine if you're using RCS, look for visual clues in the chat window. Check the text box before typing a message; it should read 'RCS message' if you're on RCS. The send button also changes depending on whether you're using RCS or SMS - with a padlock icon appearing when your message is encrypted.

You can also check the system level by tapping your profile icon in Google Messages, heading into Settings, and opening the RCS chats menu. A 'Connected' status means your RCS session is live, but even then, some conversations might still fall back to SMS due to carrier or software issues.
