Android's Affordable Dream Dies as Pixel 11 Hits $900
The recent launch of Google's Pixel 11 at $900 has sparked concerns that the affordable Android dream is dying. This price point, a flat $100 more than the base Pixel 10, marks a significant departure from the Android pitch of offering flagship hardware for less than Apple prices.
Industry-wide cost pressure, particularly due to AI data center demand and the resulting memory shortage, has led to this pricing shift. Google Devices VP Shakil Barkat acknowledged that 'hardware economics have changed' and that pricing would adjust accordingly. The cost of a gigabyte of RAM has more than quadrupled in recent times.
The Pixel 11's base price is $899, achieved by eliminating the 128GB option. However, every other configuration on the device sees the full $100 increase, with Pro models losing RAM capacity as well. Google's ability to raise prices without consequence may be a result of its market dominance and the lack of credible rivals in the US.
