Animal Kingdom Ditches Oasis Holding Zone in Favor of Discovery Island
Disney has updated its morning rope drop procedures at Animal Kingdom to align with recent changes at other EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, and Disney's Hollywood Studios. The shift separates on-site resort guests from off-site visitors after passing through the main turnstiles.
Under the new system, all visitors enter together 30-45 minutes before the official park opening. They then proceed to Discovery Island, where Cast Members verify Early Entry eligibility at designated checkpoints around the Tree of Life. This change benefits non-resort guests, who can now spread out across Discovery Island and take advantage of open space and morning shade.
Off-site visitors also gain access to PhotoPass photographers before park opening, allowing for iconic family photos without burning valuable touring hours. In contrast, Disney hotel guests see their Early Entry advantages eroded as they must navigate crowded corridors and potentially face inflated standby wait times after the rope drops at 8:00 a.m.
To maximize park hours under these updated procedures, guests should adjust their arrival plan based on their accommodation type. For those staying off-site, arriving early enough to enter the main gates by 7:15 a.m. is crucial for securing a spot directly at the taped-off checkpoint boundary.
