Animals That Live by Summer's Rhythm
Many animal species have life cycles that are closely tied to the summer season. For example, temperate crickets and grasshoppers often complete their entire life cycle during the warm months. Their eggs hatch as temperatures rise, nymphs mature rapidly through several moults, and adults reproduce before the next generation's eggs overwinter and wait for another summer.
Fireflies also have a tightly timed summer breeding season, with larvae developing underground or in leaf litter for one to two years before emerging as glowing adults that appear for only a few weeks to find mates. Horseshoe crabs gather on beaches to spawn during the summer, timing their mass nesting with new and full moon high tides.
Other species, such as luna moths, mayflies, and periodical cicadas, also have unique life cycles that are influenced by summer. The luna moth spends much of its life as a caterpillar and pupa before emerging as an adult during the summer. Adults have no functional mouthparts and live for only about a week, relying on stored energy while concentrating almost entirely on finding a mate and reproducing.
Similarly, many salmon species time their spawning migrations to summer, when river temperatures, water levels, and oxygen conditions can support their eggs. After years of life in the ocean, adults swim upstream to reproduce, with some species dying soon after spawning. For sea turtles, summer is also nesting season, with females returning to beaches to lay their eggs when sand conditions are suitable for incubation.
The sex of hatchlings is influenced by temperature, with warmer nests generally producing more females. This synchronized reproduction can have important consequences for ecosystems and the animals that inhabit them.
