Anthropic Disrupts Suspected Misuse of Amazon's Claude AI Technology
Amazon's shares gained approximately 1.6% to $255.77 on Friday as investors weighed a fresh safety challenge involving Anthropic, its largest private AI investment.
The AI developer reported that it disrupted suspected misuse of Claude connected to biological research, weapons development, and cyber operations, then tightened its defenses.
Anthropic's threat-intelligence report detailed five cases involving research that could assist biological-weapons development, although the company stopped short of claiming every researcher had harmful intent.
The $53.4 billion gain from Anthropic was roughly 3.2 times AWS's $16.62 billion in quarterly operating income and a major factor in Amazon's second-quarter results.
Amazon has plenty at stake, as the relationship between the two companies is both a major investment and a massive cloud contract with more than $100 billion in computing capacity committed over ten years.
