Anthropic Locks In $35B Cloud Deal with Nvidia-Backed Lambda
A $35 billion cloud deal between Anthropic and Nvidia-backed Lambda has been confirmed by The Wall Street Journal and Reuters. While neither company has publicly announced the agreement, sources indicate that it involves a Texas data center being built by former Bitcoin miner Hut 8.
Lambda holds the lease on the data center in Nueces County, Texas, while Nvidia has a separate arrangement with Hut 8 to secure the capacity and supplies the hardware. This setup allows Nvidia to appear at three points in the transaction without being formally party to it.
Anthropic's deal with Lambda is part of a larger trend where the company is diversifying its compute suppliers. The agreement follows Anthropic's $45 billion commitment to Nscale for capacity in West Virginia and Amazon's announcement that Anthropic will spend more than $100 billion on AWS over the next decade.
Anthropic has also been in early talks with Meta to lease $10 billion of compute, highlighting its preference for spreading contracts across multiple providers. However, critics may argue that this diversification comes at the cost of resilience, as many suppliers are deploying Nvidia's chips in buildings secured by the chipmaker itself.
