Anthropic Unveils Model Hardware Standard for AI-Physical Device Interactions
Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard (MHS) is a new research preview for scientific labs and advanced manufacturers, providing a common way for AI agents to discover, understand, and operate physical devices.
The standard extends Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), which established a framework for connecting AI models with software tools and data sources.
MHS is model-agnostic and accessible through protocols including MCP, allowing AI agents to communicate with physical machines such as microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, and manufacturing equipment.
According to IBM Principal Research Scientist Kaoutar El Maghraoui, deterministic controls and hard safety boundaries must remain firmly enforced even as AI takes on a larger operational role.
Simon Olson, founder of Toby, an AI platform for industrial manufacturing, sees standards like MHS as a way to unlock value from existing equipment, particularly in older machinery that may be difficult to operate effectively.
