APIG Takes on Google Over AI Search Summaries in France
A French federation of nearly 300 newspapers, APIG, has filed a complaint with the country's competition authority over Google's AI-generated summaries of search results. The association claims that these summaries will erode traffic to their websites and are an alleged violation of a 2022 deal between Google and French media groups.
The APIG association argues that 'information has considerable value' and that editors are seeking fair compensation for the use of their content. Google launched its AI Overviews in France in late July, which compile information from various sources above regular search results.
The competition authority had already fined Google 250 million euros ($290 million) in 2024 for failing to respect parts of the agreement. Many media groups have seen their revenue dwindle over the past two decades due to advertising moving online.
Google maintains that AI summaries allow people to ask more complex questions and discover new content, providing controls to help publishers manage their content.
