Apple Agrees to Revamp App Tracking Transparency Framework After German Probe

Germany's Federal Cartel Office has concluded an investigation into Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, finding that it gives Apple's own apps more favorable consent prompts than third-party developers. The ATT framework allows app developers to request user permission to track their personal data for targeted advertising on iPhones and iPads.

The Federal Cartel Office determined that the current ATT prompt potentially violates competition rules by making it easier for Apple's apps to obtain user consent. As a result, Apple has agreed to modify its rules within four months to ensure that consent pop-ups for third-party apps are redesigned to be neutral and visually unobtrusive.

The changes will require developers to remove discouraging language and symbols from their consent prompts, making them more user-friendly and less likely to deter users from giving permission. The new requirements will apply in almost all European Union countries and will remain in effect for seven years, monitored by a trustee.
