Apple Axes VR Team Amid Smart Glasses Push
Apple has made significant cuts to its Vision Products Group, laying off at least 60 employees from the team focused on virtual reality development. The move comes just days before John Ternus takes over as CEO, succeeding Tim Cook.
The layoffs have been described as a downsizing of the dedicated VR team paired with a sharper focus on Apple's smart glasses program. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, it is unlikely that Apple will launch another dedicated headset before late 2028 at the earliest.
The company has shifted its wearable ambitions toward smart glasses, which are expected to be unveiled at its Worldwide Developers Conference in 2027 and launched later that year. Unlike the Vision Pro, these glasses will rely primarily on onboard cameras and Siri voice assistant rather than a full augmented reality display.
