Apple Challenges UK Demand for Encrypted iCloud Data Access

Apple's stock has taken a hit after the company launched a fresh legal challenge against the UK government's demand for access to encrypted iCloud data.

The Investigatory Powers Tribunal, an independent court that reviews claims involving UK intelligence powers, is handling the case. Apple filed the complaint, which challenges a technical capability notice (TCN) that requires technology companies to provide access to customer information for investigations involving national security, terrorism, and child sexual abuse.

Apple has long argued that weakening encryption would expose users to wider security risks, saying 'As we have said many times before, we have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products or services and we never will.'

The UK government had previously backed away from a broader demand involving data access for UK and US users. The latest request reportedly applies only to British users, narrowing the dispute but keeping the encryption issue active.
