Apple Confirms Price Hikes Due to Memory Chip Costs and AI Server Demand
Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company is raising prices on its products due to skyrocketing memory chip costs. The price hikes are 'unavoidable' according to Cook, who cited the massive capital spending from tech giants building artificial intelligence servers as the primary driver behind the supply strain.
The aggressive expansion of AI infrastructure has led to a shortage in standard consumer electronics components, with high-bandwidth memory (DRAM) and enterprise solid-state drives (NAND storage) being prioritized for high-margin AI server components. Cook emphasized that pricing must return to reasonable levels for the consumer electronics sector to stabilize.
AAPL plans to raise retail prices across its hardware lineup, including the premium iPhone models, which could see a price increase of up to $270 per unit. This move is aimed at protecting Apple's profit margins under the current conditions.
