Apple Joins Google in Renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

Recently, Apple's mapping service, Apple Maps, has updated its label for Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for users in the United States. This change follows a similar decision by Google, which also renamed the lake in August after an executive order from President Trump.

The order directed federal databases to adopt the new name, and both Google and Apple have complied, with no public announcements or press releases from either company.

However, MapQuest has refused to rename the lake, posting 'We're not changing it' on their platform. This stance has seemingly earned them a boost in popularity, as they topped the U.S. App Store charts ahead of popular apps like ChatGPT.

This development highlights the role that map apps are playing in reflecting government policies and directives. Once seen as neutral infrastructure, these services have become instruments of compliance with official naming updates.
