Apple Maps Joins Google in Renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

President Donald Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' has gained momentum, with Apple Maps joining Google Maps in adopting the change. The decision follows a broader effort by the Trump administration to rebrand geographic landmarks.

According to Reuters, Apple made the move on September 1, displaying 'Lake America' for users in the United States while keeping 'Lake Ontario' for Canadian users.

This change comes amidst tensions between the US and Canada over trade and tariffs. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took to social media to defend the traditional name of Lake Ontario, stating that it comes from the Wendat word Ontari'io, meaning 'the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.'

MapQuest has refused to adopt the change, releasing a statement on X saying, 'We're not changing it.' This decision led to a boost in popularity for MapQuest, which subsequently topped Apple's app store.
