Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US Users Amid Trump-Ordered Name Change
Apple Maps made a significant change to its service on Tuesday, renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for U.S. users.
The move follows an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in January 2025, which renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
Alphabet's Google Maps also changed the name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' on its U.S. version late on Saturday, according to a report.
The change only affects users in the United States and does not reflect the views of Canada or other countries, which will continue to see the lake as Lake Ontario.
Trump's executive order has been met with opposition from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who have stated that they will not be changing the name of the lake.
