Apple Names Hardware Engineer John Ternus as New CEO

John Ternus has taken over as Apple's eighth CEO, effective September 1. Tim Cook stepped down after guiding Apple to become the largest US company by market cap.

Ternus, a hardware engineering chief since 2021, oversaw the development of various Apple products including the iPhone, iPad, AirPods, Mac computers, and the Apple Watch.

His appointment suggests that Apple is focusing on hardware innovation, unlike its fellow mega-cap technology companies which are chasing AI-related products. Some analysts consider Apple's AI position a vulnerability.

Ternus inherits headwinds including weak revenue and earnings growth, tariff exposure, memory-driven cost pressures, and clear signs that Apple lags in its AI offerings.
