Apple Quietly Pursues Brain-Computer Interface Tech Through Sonera Acquisition
Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) has acquired startup Sonera, a California-based company that developed compact magnetic sensors capable of detecting tiny magnetic fields generated by the brain and muscles without requiring skin contact or implanted devices.
The acquisition was disclosed in newly released European Union filings, which revealed Apple's purchase of Sonera in May. The startup's founders, UC Berkeley researchers Nishita Deka and Dominic Labanowski, initially focused on muscle monitoring before expanding into technology that could eventually enable everyday brain sensing.
Apple has not publicly disclosed how it plans to use the technology, but the acquisition aligns with the company's broader push into digital health, accessibility, and more natural ways for users to interact with its devices. This approach differs from Neuralink, a company founded by Elon Musk that is developing implantable brain-computer interfaces designed to capture high-fidelity neural signals.
While Neuralink focuses on helping people with severe neurological conditions regain communication and physical control, Apple's approach prioritizes accessibility and scale. Non-invasive sensors could potentially be integrated into products such as the Apple Watch or Vision Pro, enabling new forms of gesture recognition, health monitoring, or hands-free interaction without surgery.
