Apple Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amid Trump-Ordered Changes

Apple has joined Google in renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' following a request from President Trump. The move comes after the president's executive order last week, which sought to change the name of the body of water along the U.S.-Canada border. According to Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Apple was asked by Trump to make the switch last week.

The company has also renamed the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' and Mount Denali to Mount McKinley after Trump's previous executive order. However, it is unclear if Apple took a stance similar to Google, which updated its maps to reflect the name change in the U.S., but still displays Lake Ontario for Canadian users.

MapQuest, another digital map provider, has stated that it will not be changing the lake's name, with a spokesperson saying 'Name it whatever you want at your leisure.' The company has seen an engagement boost since making this statement, with its app ranking No. 1 among navigation apps and No. 8 overall on Apple's App Store chart.
