Apple Seeks Keys to OpenAI's Lab Amid AI Patent Fight

Apple has filed for accelerated court discovery into OpenAI's unreleased consumer device, requesting evidence of confidential material and its use in the gadget.

The company, led by CEO Tim Cook, is concerned about the potential competitive threat posed by on-device AI inference, which it sees as a 'competitive weapon.'

Cook emphasized Apple's commitment to on-device AI with $11.73 billion in quarterly R&D and $54.3 billion in iPhone revenue in a single June quarter.

OpenAI is facing financial challenges, including operating losses, executive departures, compute costs, and a delayed IPO, which has made it the underdog in this courtroom fight against Apple's $4.89 trillion market cap.
