Apple Takes Aim at Google and Amazon with Expanded Smart Home Plans
Apple is expanding its smart home ambitions beyond the HomePod mini and Apple TV. The company is reportedly working on new versions of existing products, a brand-new display hub called HomePad, and its first dedicated security devices.
The refreshed HomePod mini will allegedly feature the S9 chip, improved wireless connectivity, and a range of colors. It's expected to retain its current price of $129.
The Apple TV 4K is also getting an upgrade from the A15 Bionic chip to the A17 Pro, which will enable it to run some Apple Intelligence features. The new model will cost the same as before at $199.
The HomePad hub is a key development in Apple's smart home plans. It will feature a 7-inch square screen powered by an A18 chip and will support FaceTime calling, smart home capabilities, and Siri AI. Two different models are being considered, including one with a mounted screen design similar to Google's Nest Hub.
Apple is also entering the security camera market for the first time with its own device, as well as a smart doorbell. A full-size HomePod refresh is in development but without a confirmed release date.
