Apple TV Targets Open Championship Broadcast Rights
Apple TV is eyeing US broadcast rights to the Open Championship in golf as part of its continued expansion into sports broadcasting. The company has had preliminary discussions with the R&A about bidding for the Open, whose current US deal with NBC expires in 2028.
The formal tender process will take place at the start of next year, with the R&A also expecting interest from fellow streamers Netflix and Amazon. This is a major challenge to traditional broadcasters, as NBC has held live rights to the Open since 2017 when it outbid existing holders ESPN for a 12-year deal.
Apple TV has not had a successful track record in sports broadcasting, with its 10-year deal worth $2.5bn for Major League Soccer rights being terminated three years early due to disappointing viewing figures. However, the company remains committed to investing in sports rights and is searching for the right properties.
