Apple Tweaks App Tracking Rules After EU Competition Scrutiny
Apple Inc. (AAPL) has agreed to modify its App Tracking Transparency framework in Europe after Germany's Federal Cartel Office raised concerns that it favors Apple's own apps over those of third-party developers.
The new system will require third-party consent prompts to use more neutral language, symbols, and design, giving developers more room to combine Apple's consent request with separate data-protection prompts.
This change could impact companies like Meta Platforms, which relies heavily on user data for targeted ads. Advertisers have long complained that Apple's tracking rules make it harder to gauge campaigns and tailor ads.
The decision may improve the economics of mobile advertising in Europe and reduce a regulatory pressure point for Apple. However, the larger question remains whether competitive challenges will eventually force Apple to make further changes in other markets.
