Apple Unveils Record-Breaking Stock Buyback Program
Apple has announced its largest-ever stock buyback program, authorizing $110 billion in repurchases on May 2, 2024. This move came alongside a 4% increase to its quarterly cash dividend and fiscal second-quarter revenue of $90.8 billion that beat analyst expectations.
The announcement sent shares surging roughly 6% in after-hours trading, adding more than $160 billion to Apple's market capitalization in a single session.
Under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook, who took over in 2011, Apple has been funneling hundreds of billions of dollars back to investors through dividends and share repurchases. The company's services segment, which includes the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple TV+, has become an increasingly important revenue driver as hardware growth moderates.
The $110 billion authorization provides a financial foundation for such a large program, despite headwinds like declining iPhone sales, competitive pressure from Chinese smartphone makers, and tariff-related uncertainty. The dual-pronged approach championed by Cook, combining dividends with buybacks, appeals to different types of investors, providing income-focused appeal through dividends and capital appreciation and tax efficiency through buybacks.
