Apple's $4 Trillion Legacy: Cook's Mixed Record and AI Challenge
Tim Cook's 15-year tenure as Apple CEO has been marked by unprecedented financial growth and innovation. When he took over in August 2011, expectations were high but doubts about his ability to sustain Apple's extraordinary run of innovation and growth were equally strong.
Cook was seen as an operations expert rather than a traditional product person like Steve Jobs, who had just left the company for the second time due to health issues. However, under Cook's leadership, Apple's market capitalization has surged from around $350 billion to over $4 trillion, with its stock rising nearly 25-fold.
The company's annual revenue has also grown dramatically, jumping from about $108 billion in 2011 to more than $400 billion. A key factor behind this growth is the expansion of Apple's services business, which now generates over $100 billion annually and carries broader margins than its hardware business.
However, Cook's record at Apple has not been without setbacks. The Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, introduced in 2023, has struggled to achieve broad adoption due to its high price. Apple also abandoned its ambitious electric and autonomous vehicle program, Project Titan, after years of development.
The biggest question surrounding Apple's next chapter is artificial intelligence. While Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have aggressively integrated AI into their products, Apple has taken a more measured approach, prioritizing privacy, software integration, and on-device computing.
