Apple's Cloud Security Practices Under Fire in Potential $17 Billion Child Safety Settlement
Apple's stock price has been on a tear this year, up 16.3% year-to-date and roughly 33% over the past 12 months, trading around $316.29 with a market cap of $4.6 trillion.
However, Apple may be facing a potential threat to its financials in the form of a child safety settlement similar to the one Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) recently settled for $17 billion.
In an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box on September 1, 2026, West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey mentioned Apple as the next platform that could face a similar settlement, saying it was 'a very smart business decision' to settle early.
The specific claim against Apple is centered around its iCloud service, which does not permit FBI and law enforcement searches for child sexual abuse material. This gap in security is being used by the states as an argument against Apple.
