Apple's Dark Matter Pricing Test: A 10-Week Window

Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) pricing strategy for its Apple TV service has raised eyebrows, especially after the release of Dark Matter Season 2 on September 4. The second episode of the season arrived just seven days after the premiere and coincided with a price hike of 15.4% in the United States.

The new monthly price of $14.99 is a significant increase from the previous rate of $12.99, while the annual plan has risen to $119 from $99. This price change creates an interesting scenario for Apple's retention test, as it will take only two paid months under the standard terms to finish the 10-episode weekly run through October 30.

At the new list price of $29.98 per month, Apple is essentially testing whether higher prices can lift Services revenue without damaging customer retention. While Dark Matter is reportedly a hit for Apple, the company has not disclosed any audience figures or production costs associated with the show.

The lack of transparency in Apple's Services segment margins has made it challenging to gauge the impact of price hikes on customer behavior. With no clear evidence to support Apple's pricing power, investors are left wondering whether higher prices will ultimately boost revenue or drive away customers.
