Apple's Decade of Dominance: A $10,000 Stake Now Worth Over $125,000
In the past decade, Apple's market value has grown from $580 billion to over $4.54 trillion, an increase of more than two and a half times the company's entire value in August 2016.
The valuation multiple for Apple nearly tripled during this period, rising from about 13 times earnings to around 36 times. This growth was largely driven by a fourfold increase in earnings per share, which helped boost the stock price.
A $10,000 investment in Apple made in August 2016 would be worth approximately $126,000 today with dividends reinvested, but this gain came almost entirely from the share price, not the dividend itself. The company's buyback program, which retired about a third of its shares over the decade, also contributed to the growth.
Looking ahead, Apple's future performance will depend heavily on its ability to sustain earnings growth and maintain its valuation multiple. While the stock remains a high-quality business with unusual staying power, investors should be cautious in their expectations for future returns.
