Apple's Foldable iPhone Set to Spark Major Market Resurgence
Apple's highly anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market is expected to be a major catalyst for the industry, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). The tech giant's first foldable iPhone, set to launch on September 9, 2026, is projected to ship over 10 million units in its first year.
The high-end device, priced at $2,500, targets an elite consumer segment. Analysts expect strong interest despite the premium price tag, with Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC, stating that 'a very elite set of consumers are being targeted here.'
IDC predicts Apple's arrival will inject momentum into the market, averting a projected double-digit percentage decline this year. The firm forecasts the foldable sector will grow by 12.6% this year and accelerate to 18% next year.
By 2027, Apple is expected to command 40% of total worldwide foldable shipments, reversing a declining market trend. The broader smartphone market faces headwinds, with overall shipments projected to drop by a record 16.7% this year due to supply chain constraints and rising component costs.
