Apple's Foldable iPhone Sets Premium Standard as Rivals Follow Suit

Apple's decision to adopt dual ultra-thin glass (UTG) in its first foldable iPhone has set a new standard for the industry. Google, Oppo, and Vivo are now planning to follow suit, with Samsung Display building UTG prototypes for their 2027 launches.

The dual-UTG approach features one sheet of ultra-thin glass above the OLED panel as the cover window and another beneath it for structural support. This design reduces crease visibility and raises overall quality, making it a premium standard in the industry.

While Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 series takes a different route with a single UTG layer on top plus titanium alloy film and reinforced plate underneath, Apple's rivals have opted for the extra glass despite its higher cost. Oppo and Vivo have made crease reduction and durability central selling points for their Find N and X Fold lines.

New models using dual UTG are slated for early 2027 at Oppo, the first half of the year at Vivo, and the second half at Google. The shift to dual UTG is expected to benefit the UTG supply chain, as each device will now consume two sheets of glass instead of one.
