Apple's Incoming CEO Faces Huge Task After Tim Cook's Stunning 2,150% Return
Apple's incoming CEO John Ternus has big shoes to fill after Tim Cook delivered a 2,150% return for shareholders over 15 years. The iPhone still drives more than half of Apple's sales, but under Cook's leadership, the company grew beyond its iconic products.
Cook scaled high-margin services like iCloud, Apple Pay, and Apple Music, deepening the ecosystem and increasing customer stickiness. Revenue grew from $108 billion in 2011 to over $466 billion on a trailing-12-month basis, with the market cap increasing from $338 billion to $4.5 trillion.
Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran, has led the company's hardware engineering team since 2013 and has been endorsed by Cook as the right person to lead Apple into the future. Ternus' commitment to product quality is evident in recent results, with iPhone revenue up 22% year over year through the first three quarters of fiscal 2026.
As Apple transitions from an operations management background under Cook to a product design background under Ternus, the company may be well-positioned to integrate artificial intelligence features more deeply into its products and software.
