Apple's Product Event Falls Short: Needham & Company Retains Hold Rating
Apple's recent product event failed to impress analysts at Needham & Company, who retained their Hold rating on the tech giant.
Analyst Laura Martin highlighted the new CEO John Ternus' 'take-charge leadership style', saying he is more likely to fill the role of a 'wartime CEO' in a period of Agentic AI disruption.
The new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models, with their $100 price increase, are not enough to drive an iPhone replacement cycle, according to Martin. She also expressed concerns about the absence of low-end iPhones until spring, which could pressure Apple's installed base in the medium term.
Martin was critical of the newly announced foldable iPhone, citing its high price point of $2,000 and weak consumer demand for the form factor, with only 5% of total smartphone sales. She also contrasted Apple's approach to AI assistants with Meta's recently announced Muse, noting that Apple's assistant is limited to working across its own products and apps.
