Apple's Ternus Inherits Multitrillion-Dollar Empire with AI Challenges Ahead
Tim Cook will step down as CEO of Apple on September 1 and be replaced by John Ternus, who has been leading the company's hardware division. In his 15 years at the helm, Cook transformed Apple from a $350 billion company into a $4.5 trillion behemoth, largely driven by the success of its wearables business.
Cook's tenure was marked by significant growth in sales and profit, with annual revenue rising from $108 billion to $416 billion and profit more than quadrupling to $112 billion. The company's wearables segment, which includes products like Apple Watch and AirPods, brought in $35 billion in sales last fiscal year.
However, critics have accused Cook of losing Apple's innovation edge, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The company has faced challenges with its AI features, including delays in revamping Siri. Ternus will need to address this challenge and demonstrate that AI is more than just an app on the iPhone.
Cook's departure comes as Apple continues to navigate the complex relationship between the US and China, where many of its products are manufactured. The company has been expanding its manufacturing capabilities in India and other countries to reduce its dependence on China.
