Aptoide Returns to US Google Play After Over a Decade

Google Play has welcomed back Aptoide, an alternative Android app store, after over a decade-long absence from the US market. The platform's return is thanks to a court-driven policy shift that aims to increase competition among Android app stores.

Aptoide operates independently of Google and offers its users more than 40,000 apps, with approximately 25 million monthly active users. Its gaming store was the first to take advantage of the new rules, which allow alternative stores to distribute their own content through the Play Store.

The changes in policy were sparked by the Epic Games v. Google lawsuit, filed in 2020, which accused Google of anticompetitive practices in the Android market. The ruling in favor of Epic Games paved the way for updates to how Google Play operates, including the launch of the Play Catalog Access Program on June 22, 2026.
