Argentine Media Company Sues OpenAI, Microsoft Over Unauthorized Use of Journalism
Argentine media company Editorial Perfil has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft in Argentina's Federal Civil and Commercial Courts, accusing the tech giants of using its journalism without permission or payment to develop their AI systems.
The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI and Microsoft tracked, downloaded, and stored Editorial Perfil's articles, investigations, and interviews through large-scale scraping, and then used them as training material for their AI models, which are sold commercially for billions of dollars.
According to the suit, Microsoft products including Bing, Copilot, and Azure AI draw on journalistic content to answer user queries directly, reducing traffic and advertising revenue for Editorial Perfil and other news outlets.
The company also accuses OpenAI and Microsoft of unfair competition and abuse of a dominant market position, arguing that large tech platforms hold outsized power in the digital ecosystem relative to media companies.
