Arm and IBM Team Up to Develop Dual-Architecture Processor
A new dual-architecture processor has been developed by IBM in collaboration with Arm. This chip will be able to run both Arm-based Linux environments and IBM's z/OS, allowing for greater versatility. According to tech analyst George Cozma, this is not unprecedented, as a similar chip was developed by IBM in the 1990s.
The new processor is built on a 2nm technology node and contains 11 high-performance cores, operating at over 5.7 GHz. It also has AI inference accelerators and an on-chip data processing unit for I/O. Arm claims that this collaboration will bring together IBM's reliability, security, and scalability with Arm's power-efficient architecture.
Executive Vice President of the Cloud AI Business Unit for Arm, Mohamed Awad, stated that 'As enterprises scale AI and modernize their infrastructure, the breadth of the Arm software ecosystem is enabling these workloads to run across a broader range of environments.'
